Kingmaker Kamaraj – Eye opener of Education 

1.Introduction about kingmaker kamaraj

  • Kamaraj who is renowned for his integrity and sacrifice, was born on 15th July 1903 at Virudhunagar , Madras Presidency, British India. He dropped from the school during his 5th grade due to the financial conditions of his family. During his young age he used to go to library and read more books and he heard freedom struggle from the daily news papers. When he heard about the Jallianwalabagh massacre,  he joined Indian national congress to participate in freedom movement against foreign rule (British Raj).

2.Entry into Politics

  •       The inspiring speeches of the leaders made Kamaraj stir against the suppressive attitude of the English and made him to join in the Indian National Congress. He also participated in Vaikam sathyagraha in kerala. Kamaraj fully involved himself in the congress party at the age of 18. He participated in all struggles conducted by congress party. When he participated in the salt sathyagraha in 1930, for that he was arrested and given two years of imprisonment. He become source of Congress growth in Virudhunagar. Due to hardwork in the party several posts came in search of kamarajar. Kamaraj was elected as representative of Ramnad district. Sathyamoorthy, a great political leader in INC Madras presidency was the political guru of him. Kamarajar acted as his right hand. In 1937, Kamarajar won in Sattur constituency as the member of legislative assembly. He participated in many movements like Quit India movement and got imprisonment. Though he got chairmanship of virudhunagar Municipality, he resigned for the cause of Freedom. When India became free in 1947, the fame of kamaraj grown and he become Member of Parliament in the election of 1952.








3.Chief Minister OF Madras Presidency

  •      He become the chief minister of Madras presidency on 13th April 1954,By winning in Kudiyatham by-election. Ministry of Kamrajar consisted eight persons the chance were given to C. Subramaniam, M.Bhakthavatsalam, Paramesvaran, A.P. Sethi, Kakkan, Ramnad raja and Ramasamy Padayatchi. In 1957, He won in State election by getting 151 seats. Kamaraj again become Chief Minister of Madras Presidency.




4.Administrative Achievements

  •        Kamarajar felt the indispensability of education towards the socio-economic welfare of the society. He established school in every nook and corner of Tamilnadu including villages his motives was ‘’a nursery schools in villages, a primary school in a gram panchayats, a High school in small towns, a college in every Towns and cities”. He succeeded in his motive and introduced the famous scheme called “Midday meal scheme” which help poor students to ate in school so that every poor children will come to school to study. So he praised as “Kalvi kann thirandavar” means eye opener of education in the Tamilnadu. Kamarajar constructed many Dams for irrigation purpose including Upper Bhavani, Lower Bhavani, Manimuthar, sathanur, Pullambadi, Vaigai, Amaravathi and Krishnagiri. He introduced land reforms to protect welfare of Agricultural peasants. He introduced many cooperative societies in Districts of Tamilnadu. He established BHEL in Tiruchirappalli, Photofilm industry at ooty, Oil refinery in manali, coal mine in Neyveli due to this projects tamilnadu held third place in India for Industrial growth. He took efforts to establish IIT Madras in 1959.









5.K Plan or Kamaraj Plan

  •     After the Chinese invasion in 1962, the popularity of the congress party began to diminish. The congress also failed in the interim elections. So Kamraj proposed a plan in which he stated the elder leaders of the party should forego their ministerships and came forward to work towards the strengthening of the INC. As per the plan, Kamarajar left his chief minister post and gave it to Bhakthavatsalam, and it was followed by Lal bahadur shastri, Morarji Desai. Many political experts said that it was the plan that revived the Congress during Nehru Era. In Bhuvaneshwar Congress, he was elected as leader of ALL India Congress.


       

6.King Maker 

  •     He was highly influential in state and central congress party. He was the cause for the elevation of several people. As far as Madras Presidency is concerned Prakasam, Panthalu, Ramasamy Reddiyar and Rajagopalachari got themselves elevated to higher posts only because of Kamraj. In the centre, he was responsible for the unopposed selection of Lal Bahadur Sastri as the Prime minister of India after Nehru. In the event of death of sashtri in 1966 Kamarajar made Indira Gandhi as the Prime minister of India. Hence, he was called the “King Maker”.




 



7.Kamarajar, The Legend

  •     Kamarajar set an example to the later administrators by his simplicity, straight forwardness, patriotism and eagerness in the welfare of the people. He was the son of the soil and shined as the gem of mankind. Kamarajar who was at his zenith of fame died on 2nd October 1975 same date  that his leader Mahatma Gandhi was born.
